German data proposals could favour US internet giants

Google and Facebook could be among the US companies that stand to benefit if German proposals to include data protection rules in planned US-EU trade agreements are taken on.

The US high-tech sector is keen for this step to happen, as it believes that the EU rules would be thinned down as a result. EU rules are currently much tougher than those in the US. The Financial Times quotes Sidley Austin partner Charles Raul as saying: 'To date, US businesses operating online in the EU or engaged in transatlantic digital trade have encountered significant obstacles and impediments.'
