India's legal block on drug-testing to be reviewed

The current block on the US$450m industry in India may be lifted in a few months as the government plans to make changes and clarifications to the existing tight rules.

The clampdown happened earlier this year when the Supreme Court, in response to numerous public interest lawsuits, suspended 157 clinical trials. Indian standards had been seen by some as being rather loose but the legal response has largely frozen what was becoming a boom sector for the country. Mahima Datla, MD of Biological E, the vaccine producer, said that the shutdown 'will kill drug development in India.
