Law firms panic in a drought. Instead of hunkering down and concentrating on retaining existing clients with enhanced services during harsh economic weather, they send their partners out to do elaborate rain dances in a desperate attempt to convince the gods to let rip with a sharp shower if nothing else. More than 60 per cent of top-flight law firm partners responding to our survey said they were facing increased demands from management teams to magic up new instructions. Only 7 per cent seemed to have managing partners with a longer-term, more reasonable attitude.
