Kirkland partner lashes out at irritating firm-wide emails

A Kirkland & Ellis partner has found himself in the midst of a global storm after lashing out on the subject of unnecessary emails from his colleagues. However, the market backs him, a poll has found.

Law firm partner is outraged by too many emails Soliman Design

In a missive to all the firm’s lawyers, Kenneth Morrison blasted annoying firm-wide emails from far-distant lawyers with a sarcastic reply, according to Above the Law which was sent the email by a source. He complained that within an hour of arriving in the office, he had been personally solicited, as had all other lawyers in the firm, with requests for information (RFIs) on a wide range of topics, which included transferring a trademark, avoiding customs requirements and ‘lawyering up for a frivolous litigaton matter in New Jersey.’ He joked that he was not thinking like a team player when he suggested a more tailored approach to emails. 'That just leaves out so many people who want to be part of each and every team here,' he said.

'Hilarious'

However, Mr Morrison has many supporters, judging by a poll carried out by the website.  Some 62 per cent found his email completely justified and hilarious whilst 15 per cent said it was somewhat inappropriate and 10 per cent described it as appropriate. The meandering email also listed 10 things which were likely to be in the next firm-wide RFIs.

The Ken Morrison list of most irritating emails:

10. Have you ever moved to vacate an arbitration award?
9. Precedent for a “motion to dismiss” is hereby requested.
8. Does anyone know a good divorce attorney any place in the world?
7. Has anyone ever taken a deposition somewhere?
6. Can you recommend a criminal lawyer in any city in the U.S. for a “friend of the firm”?
5. Do you have a contact at any company anywhere?
4. Whether or not you went to Yale Law School, would you like to make a contribution to it?
3. Does anyone know what is meant by a “reasonably priced attorney”?
2. Would you like to buy a chalk-stripe suit where the chalk stripes actually say “Kirkland & Ellis”?
1. Does anyone have precedent for a contract?
(Astute readers with long memories will recognize that two of the items on this list were actual RFIs to #FW Attorneys. Can you tell which ones?)
