City-based corporate partners Ekin Akar and Deborah Kirk are set to join the Latham & Watkins partnership from 1 January. The firm has promoted 27 new partners across its global network, marking a slight increase from the 25 promotions announced last year. However, the number of new London partners has halved from four to two, and the firm’s efforts towards gender equity have dropped off significantly. While women accounted for 48 per cent of the new partners announced by Latham & Watkins in 2015, only four (including Ms Kirk) have made the cut this year.

Spread of promotions

The latest round has once again favored lawyers in Latham & Watkins heartland, with US-based lawyers accounting for 21 of the total promotions. New York and Chicago each received the biggest batch of new partners with four apiece, with three then going to each of Washington DC and Los Angeles, two to London, Frankfurt, Orange County and San Francisco, and one each to Hamburg, Boston, Dubai, San Diego and Silicon Valley. Of those promoted, almost half are from Latham & Watkins’ corporate practice.
