Law firms are engaging in shallow innovation, says Novus director

After making 'little effort to improve the product while the good times rolled', the legal profession is now creating 'a lot of shallow innovation', according to the director of client solutions at Chicago-based Novus Law.

The legal profession must adapt, for the first time in more than 100 years, to unprecedented market change

Dan Currell of Novus wrote in Bloomberg Business of Law: 'Law firms offer a service that looks much the same today as it has looked for decades — though the cost has gone up.' He says that apparent innovations such as alternative fees, new staffing models and project management are often examples of shallow change.
