Law market deteriorates for Australian graduates

Over the last two years the proportion of law graduates unable to find full-time work within four months of graduating has risen sharply from 21.5 to 25%, according to the GradStats report.

Medical students: better prospects

Even so, the report from Graduate Careers Australia shows that law graduates are better off than graduates as a whole - of whom 32% are now without a full-time job within four months of getting their certificate. Marie Iskander of the Australian Law Students' Association said: 'It is well accepted that law firms, for example, have almost halved their graduate intake since 2008 … I don’t necessarily think all of these shrinking graduate opportunities are attributable to the GFC [Global Financial Crisis], but it may be a contributing factor.'

Medicine

The best placed graduates in the market, as regards finding a job, come from medicine, pharmacy, nursing, veterinary, mining, engineering and surveying. Humanities are among the worst placed. Source: Lawyers Weekly
