Lawyer at centre of Ukraine negotiations

Lawyer Arseniy Yatsenyuk, the opposition leader who has been offered the role of prime minister, is one of the main people negotiating for fresh elections in Ukraine.

The fact that Mr Yatsenyuk rejected the prime ministership offer shows, says the BBC, that the opposition is relatively confident in its position and sees the president who made the offer, Viktor Yanukovych, as being comparatively weak. Mr Yatsenyuk's position within the opposition appears to have strengthened in the last two months. In early December he was seen as one of four main opposition leaders, not as the pre-eminent one.
