Lawyers are continuing to oppose a proposal to have them wear black robes for official duties. The plan was made three years ago, but some lawyers argue that wearing black robes would make them look like women, Nazeeh Abdullah Mousa, a lawyer in the city of Jeddah, said. Women in Gulf countries wear full-length black robes, called abayas, in public. Gulf men wear cloaks over their kandoars on formal occasions. Justice military consultant Majid Qaroob said the proposal for the black robes was still being studied and that it had been mainly put forward in the public interest.
