A 60-day emergency decree has been put in place in Bangkok and nearby areas - as the latest event in an eight-year struggle over the political role of former prime minister and billionaire Thaksin Shinawatra. According to the Bangkok Post, the Human Rights Lawyers Association has said that 'the situation does not warrant the decree as the survival of the nation is not under a grave threat .' It also warns that the decree could 'lead to human rights violations as authorities can arrest suspects without charge and control media outlets'. Source: Bangkok Post
