Philip Corboy – described by the Chicago Tribune newspaper as ‘a fierce advocate for victims’ – died yesterday at his home of natural causes, according to a statement from the law firm he co-founded, Corboy & Demetrio.
Mr Corboy was named in the past by the National Law Journal as one of the US’s 100 most influential lawyers. In a career that spanned half a century, he is credited, according to the Tribune, with helping ‘enhance the respectability of personal injury law in Chicago and nationwide’.
His long-standing partner, Tom Demetrio, told the newspaper: ‘When Phil would talk about levelling the playing field, he was talking about retaining good lawyers like him to up and fight these guys who are trying to minimise a company’s loss’.
Mr Corboy’s funeral is scheduled for this Saturday.
