Katherine Grainger became the most decorated female athlete in the history of Team GB last week when she and partner Victoria Thornley powered their way to a silver medal in the women’s double skulls in Rio on Thursday. Once added to the pile with her gold medal from the London 2012 double skulls, a silver in the Beijing 2008 quadruple skulls, a silver in the Athens 2004 coxless pair and a silver in the Sydney 2000 quadruple skulls, Ms Grainger has now won more Olympic medals than any female British athlete before her. However, Ms Grainger’s achievements are not limited to the world of sport – she also holds a law degree from Edinburgh University, a master's in medical law and ethics from Glasgow University and a PhD in sentencing and the law of homicide at Kings College London. When not out making Olympic history, Ms Grainger is the chancellor of Oxford Brookes University – a position previously held by the likes of Shami Chakrabarti and Helena Kennedy QC. Grainger will be more law and less oar going forward, confirming to the BBC last week that the Rio Olympics will be her last: ‘It has been even better than most people expected, including myself, but there’s a limit to my abilities,’ she said.
