Linklaters and DLA Piper have helped Singaporean client Aroland Holdings secure planning permission for 1 Undershaft, a new skyscraper set to be built on the site of the former Aviva Tower. At an expected 304.6m, the 73-story building will be second in height only to the iconic Shard, which reaches 310m at its tip. A Linklaters team led by real estate planning partner David Watkins advised Aroland Holdings all aspects relating to the planning application for the building, while DLA Piper partner Ian Brierley advised the company on other mainstream real estate issues. 1 Undershaft has been nicknamed ‘The Trellis’ in honour of its distinctive crosshatched design.
Symbolic victory
After securing planning permission this week, the new icon of the London city skyline is slated for completion sometime during 2020. Mr Watkins told Legal Business: ‘It is certainly an exciting deal. It will become the apex of the cluster of tall building in the City. It helps to show business as usual for the City and speaks volumes that foreign investors are willing to invest in London.’ It is anticipated that The Trellis will house around 10,000 workers across 130,000 square meters of office space.
