Former environment secretary Ms Truss is the first woman and third non-lawyer to become Lord Chancellor. She read Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford, worked for Shell and Cable & Wireless and was deputy director of the think tank Reform before being elected as South West Norfolk MP in 2010.
‘Safeguard
Law Society CEO Catherine Dixon told The Lawyer: ‘We welcome her appointment and look forward to working with her as we have with her predecessors. … The legal sector contributes £25.7bn to our economy creating more than 370,000 jobs. We are calling on the government to safeguard the ability of lawyers to practice across the EU and other issues such as extradition rights which protect the interests of justice and safeguard our citizens.’
Cabinet reshuffle casualty
Mr Gove was sacked this morning after 16 months in the post. The Brexit campaigner was one of several casualties of Prime Minister Theresa May’s cabinet reshuffle, but won favour with many in the legal profession after reversing decisions taken by his predecessor Chris Grayling.
