Legal Week newspaper reports that the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal stuck off Grierson, a former banking and finance partner at transatlantic law firm Hogan Lovells, who was widely known for his work on the BCCI litigation in the 1990s. The tribunal also ordered him to pay £14,000 in costs.
According to the newspaper, the tribunal noted that the fraud was planned, involved a substantial amount of money and a clear breach of trust. However, it also commented that mitigating factors were important, notably Grierson’s on-going serious heart condition and mental illness, the fact that he had repaid the stolen money, and that he had personally been financial ruined by the episode.
Hogan Lovells sacked Grierson from its partnership in May 2011 following an internal investigation.
