Two other firms take top place in one ranking each - Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt and Stikeman Elliott. Commenting on the results, Andrew Parker of the McCarthy Tetrault business law group said: 'It’s the diversity of our practice that resulted in a pretty good year. There was just a little bit of everything. There was a fair amount of financial institution work. They were very capital-hungry throughout the year.'
Energy deals
In total, there were 488 deals in 2014, worth a total of C$130b - virtually the same level of activity as in 2013. Eric Moncik of Blake, Cassels & Graydon said: 'If you look back at the year, energy really led the way throughout the first three quarters.' But the activity in the energy sector diminished towards the end of the year and, given the halving of the oil price, is not expected to pick up this quarter and possibly not for longer.
