Ministry of Justice fined £180,000 for data breach

A data breach impacting nearly 3000 prisoners has seen one of the highest fines levied on the justice department.

The Ministry of Justice has been accused of 'serious failings' in its handling of data relating to prisons and given a fine of £180,000. The Information Commissioner's Office found that it had not informed prisons to turn on the encryption function on backup computer memories. As a result, highly confidential information on nearly 3000 prisoners was lost.
