US Major League Baseball team the Baltimore Orioles has hired Kamaal Jones as chief legal officer and general counsel.
Jones joins from Monumental Sports & Entertainment – owner of ice hockey team Washington Capitals and basketball team Washington Wizards, among other sports assets – where he was assistant GC. At the Orioles, he will lead all in-house legal and compliance operations.
Maryland-based Baltimore Orioles was sold last year to a group of investors led by private equity veteran David Rubenstein in a deal worth $1.7bn. The Orioles last won the World Series in 1983.
Jones was part of a double executive hire, with the club also hiring Mark Fine as chief marketing officer.
Catie Griggs, Orioles president of business operations, said: “We are thrilled to have Mark and Kamaal join our organisation as we continue to expand and elevate our front office. Both Mark and Kamaal are proven leaders who bring a wealth of knowledge and experience that will provide our organisation with tremendous guidance, innovative ideas and a passion for the opportunities ahead.”
Jones arrives after just over three years at Monumental, having previously spent a decade as associate GC at US government and military contractor Booz Allen Hamilton – his first in-house role. Prior to that he worked in private practice at Venable and WilmerHale, having graduated from Harvard Law School in 2006.
He said: “As a lifelong Marylander, I have vivid childhood memories of Orioles games at Memorial Stadium and the iconic Camden Yards. I couldn’t be more thrilled to now join such a legendary organisation. This is an exciting time for the team and its passionate fans, with terrific play on the field and a potentially transformative vision for Camden Yards and its Baltimore home.”
In other recent sports-related in-house moves, earlier this month the UK’s shadow Independent Football Regulator appointed Competition and Markets Authority lawyer David Riley as its first legal head. Riley is tasked with building up the IFR’s legal team in anticipation of the regulator being enshrined into law.
And in April last year, NFL team Chicago Bears hired Krista Whitaker as CLO from NBA team Miami Heat.
