US energy company Constellation has named Matthew Price as its next general counsel, replacing David Dardis who has been promoted to chief legal and policy officer.
Price joins from Jenner & Block, where he was a partner and co-chair of its energy practice. He brings with him considerable expertise on energy policy issues, including market design, carbon regulation, transmission policy and other legal matters involving the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy.
Price will report directly to Dardis, who will retain overall leadership of the company’s legal and policy functions.
Baltimore-based Constellation says it is America’s largest producer of clean energy, responsible for 10% of the country’s carbon free energy through nuclear, wind, hydro and solar generation.
Dardis said: “Matthew has deep experience litigating and counselling on matters involving energy policy and regulation, including defending state programmes that support emissions-free nuclear power plants. I am excited to partner with Matthew and for him to bring his industry expertise to Constellation as we continue to deliver reliable, affordable clean energy to our customers and communities.”
Price has been with Chicago firm Jenner & Block for just over 15 years, his first role in private practice after a year spent clerking for Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer.
Dardis, meantime, has been with the Constellation brand since 2007, when he joined as chief regulatory counsel before becoming deputy GC in 2011 and then GC in 2016 while Constellation was still part of Exelon. He then became GC and CLO following Constellation’s separation from Exelon in February 2022.
Prior to his time at Constellation, Dardis spent almost two years as a legal advisor at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and a year as an attorney at Hunton & Williams.
In other recent energy-related moves, in July Spanish oil giant Cepsa announced it was hiring Virginia Beltramini as CLO from Atento, replacing Jörg Häring who left to join German healthcare business Fresenius Medical Care. In June, ExxonMobil named former Fox Corporation legal head Jeff Taylor as its next GC, replacing Craig Morford who was due to retire in July.
