Michael wonders if lawyers are among the worst when it comes to working outside normal hours and, as an IT lawyer, has no problem in recalling the long hours staring at a computer screen while sipping that third cup of coffee.
‘Individuals who find themselves unable to leave their work in the office should talk to their managers and learn to switch off their smartphones,’ said the Beeb’s expert.
‘If an individual can’t leave his work in the office, his manager’s not the right person to talk to; a therapist would be a far better option,’ comments Michael.
He adds: ‘The best practice of law occurs during daylight hours apparently and working late into the evening smacks of desperation and unprofessionalism. I suppose an exception can be made if there’s a particular client that needs to be impressed (usually to help justify the, um, fees), but otherwise it’s a strictly colleague-only policy when it comes to evening emails.’
