Swedish music streaming platform Spotify has appointed interim general counsel Kevan Choset to the GC role full time after he stepped up to replace Eve Konstan back in January.

Choset was previously the company’s associate GC and head of legal strategy. As legal chief, he will be responsible for overseeing Spotify's global legal team and all related matters.

Stockholm-headquartered Spotify is one of the world’s largest music streaming platforms. It made a net profit for the first time in the company’s history last year, just months after scrapping royalty payments for music with under 1,000 streams and raising fees for subscribers.

Writing on LinkedIn, Choset said: “Over the past 12 years, I’ve had the privilege to serve in a range of roles across our legal team, supporting the company through an extraordinary period of growth, transformation and global impact. I’ve long been inspired by Spotify’s mission – and I’m excited to continue contributing to it in this new capacity.”

Choset originally joined Spotify in 2013 as legal counsel and head of IP and litigation, before becoming associate GC in 2017 and adding the head of legal strategy role in 2020. Prior to joining Spotify, he was senior counsel for business and legal affairs and IP and litigation at MTV Networks in New York.

Before going in-house, Choset spent more than five years as an associate at Davis Wright Tremaine, having started his legal career at Cahill Gordon & Reindel.

Konstan, meanwhile, announced she was stepping back from full-time legal work back in January. She had been Spotify’s GC since 2020, when she joined from WarnerMedia Entertainment. Prior to that, she spent 20 years at Warner subsidiary HBO, including almost five years as GC. She started her legal career as an associate at Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton.

In a LinkedIn post at the time, New York-based Konstan said she was looking forward to dedicating more time to the non-profit and educational causes that inspire her, as well as spending more time with her family and friends. She added that she remained open to opportunities where her experience and insights could add value, such as through board service.

In other recent audio-related moves, in April, US radio giant iHeart Media hired former CBS Sports GC David Hillman as its chief legal officer. And in February, online radio broadcaster SiriusXM lured ex-Airbnb CLO Richard Baer out of retirement to take the helm as GC.
