US networking and cloud services provider Lumen Technologies has hired Mark Hacker as chief legal officer.

He will take over from interim CLO Meredith Hayes, who resumes her previous role as deputy GC and chief ethics and compliance officer.

Hacker was most recently general counsel at Motorola Solutions. At Lumen, he will be responsible for the company’s legal and public policy functions, overseeing legal strategy, corporate governance, regulatory compliance, government affairs and ethics.

Monroe, Louisiana-based Lumen provides networking, cloud and cybersecurity services to businesses.

Kate Johnson, president and CEO of Lumen Technologies, said: “Mark is a bold, strategic leader with a deep understanding of the complex legal and policy environment facing today’s technology companies. His track record of building teams and guiding transformative change while upholding the highest standards makes him a perfect fit for Lumen as we continue to establish ourselves as the trusted network for AI.”

Hacker spent more than two decades at Motorola before stepping down from the GC role in February 2023 and leaving the company later that year, citing personal reasons.

He originally joined Motorola as corporate counsel back in 2001, serving in a number of legal roles before being promoted to GC in 2013. Prior to his time in-house, he was a corporate finance associate at Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney.

He said: “I’m excited to join Lumen at such a pivotal time in its journey. This is a company with cutting-edge assets, decisive leadership and a clear vision for the future. I look forward to working with Kate, the leadership team and the talented professionals across legal and public policy to help shape Lumen’s future.”

Hayes, meanwhile, stepped in as interim following the departure of Chad Ho in February. Ho had only joined the company in June last year. He was previously CLO at US travel tech company Sabre Corporation and earlier in his career spent 14 years as GC at streaming platform Hulu and two years as deputy GC at social media platform MySpace. Lumen didn’t give a reason for his departure.

In other recent US tech moves, in March AI automation business Nintex hired former Limeade GC Sarah Visbeek as its legal head. And in February, AI platform Inflection AI hired Withers partner Doug Mandell as GC.
