UK contract intelligence platform Luminance has appointed Don Riddick as its new chief legal officer.
He joins from AI software company amotivv and will lead Luminance's legal, governance and compliance functions and advise the board on legal and risk matters.
He will also serve as company secretary and report to Luminance CEO Eleanor Lightbody.
The CLO role is a new position, although Riddick effectively replaces former general counsel Harry Borovick, who is leaving for a new challenge, according to his LinkedIn page.
Riddick said of his new role: “My goal is to be the voice of the lawyer and the legal team, to really identify how we can provide true contract intelligence at scale and speed. One of the things that you would expect of a CLO coming into a legaltech company is that you are the first user and the primary advocate… for the technology that you’re providing.”
On his priorities as CLO, Riddick said: “The first thing that you do as a CLO is try to figure out the primary risks that impact your shareholders, and the potential value of the company, that can create regulatory exposures for yourself and your customers."
Before joining amotivv, where he was founding principal and chief strategy officer, Riddick spent nearly five-and-a-half years as CLO at Featurespace, a Luminance client.
Riddick said he used the platform while at Featurespace to understand the company’s contractual commitments, gaining first-hand experience of how it could cut weeks of contract research.
He added: “It is exciting – as a Luminance customer, I was primarily engaging with the firm. It is a very different feeling when you’re responsible as one of the executives for the technology rather than just a user.”
Riddick began his career at IBM, where he spent more than 14 years, including around seven as contract executive team leader in its legal department.
In July, Luminance launched a customer advisory board to provide a forum for senior figures across legal, operations, procurement, finance and other business functions, including former Lord Chief Justice Lord Ian Burnett of Maldon, to exchange views on significant technology shifts and AI opportunities.
In February 2025, the company – whose backers include Slaughter and May – raised $75m in a Series C funding round.
The financing was led by Point72 Private Investments alongside Forestay Capital, RPS Ventures, Schroders Capital and existing investors March Capital and National Grid Partners, as well as Slaughters.
