US nursing home operator PACS Group has hired Patrick Murphy as chief legal officer, replacing John Mitchell who has retired.
Murphy joins from King & Spalding, where he was a partner in its special matters group with a focus on internal investigations related to healthcare fraud and Foreign Corrupt Practices Act cases. At PACS Group, he will oversee its legal function and provide counsel on operations and strategy-related matters.
Salt Lake City-based PACS Group operates more than 350 care homes and senior living facilities across the US.
Jason Murray, PACS Group’s chairman and CEO, said: “Pat brings an exceptional combination of healthcare, corporate, regulatory and public-sector legal experience. His ability to address complex legal matters while serving as a strategic partner to organisational leaders makes him well suited to guide our legal function.”
Murphy arrives after about a year and a half at King & Spalding, having previously been global head of litigation and investigations at Fresenius Medical Care for just over seven years.
Prior to that he spent more than 18 years at GE Healthcare as general counsel for litigation and compliance following an earlier spell at King & Spalding as counsel. He started his legal career as assistant GC at the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Mitchell, meanwhile, stepped down this month after just under a decade with the company. He will remain on as a consultant to support the transition.

His judgement, integrity and thoughtful counsel have helped us navigate growth and change while remaining focused on our mission. In other recent healthcare moves, back in July US biotech company Biogen hired Michael Parini as CLO from Spur Therapeutics, replacing Susan Alexander who left the business at the end of May.
