An internal memo sent to Ropes & Gray employees yesterday confirmed that Mr Allen will be stepping down as senior partner for the firm’s London office at the end of this year. Mr Allen has held the role since 2014, when the co-managing partner role that he previously shared with Mike Goetz was split in two. An esteemed finance lawyer, Mr Allen served stints at Weil, Gotshal & Manges, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and White & Case before joining Ropes & Gray in 2009 to help spearhead the launch of the Boston-headquartered firm’s first office in London.
Leadership restructure
There are no current plans to replace Mr Allen in the role of senior partner. Instead, the firm is looking to move towards a broader leadership structure that will likely include a London office executive committee, reports a spokesperson for the firm. Mr Allen will stay on as a consultant at Ropes & Gray following his retirement from the senior partner post. He commented: ‘I was very lucky that Ropes & Gray came along, otherwise I could have reached a low point at Freshfields. But no more moving now – this will be my last home.’
