Ropes & Gray has scaled back the number of associates it is making up to partner from 17 last year to 11 this year, though the number of London partners selected for promotion remains unchanged at two. Newly appointed tax partner Andrew Howard has been working with Ropes & Gray since 2014, having previously served three years as an associate a Sullivan & Cromwell. Joining him in the partnership will be real estate lawyer David Seymour, who was trained and worked at Slaughter and May between for seven years before joining his current firm in 2012.
Mostly US, mostly men
Of the nine other lawyers named as new partner, four are based in Ropes & Gray’s home city of Boston, two in New York, and one in each of the firm’s offices in Silicon Valley, Washington DC and Hong Kong. Private equity took on the most partners, while the US-based pharmaceutical and health care practice group also received a boost. Only three of the new appointees are women last year, while women made up more than half of the firm’s partner promotions in 2015.
