SA legal reform bill could spark court challenges

The Chief Justice of South Africa has said that the Legal Practice Bill might end up being challenged in court.

Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng was acknowledging the unpopularity of the bill with parts of the legal profession and some judges. He said: 'My suspicion is there may even be litigation about the Legal Practices Bill because there are concerns about the role of the minister [of justice].' The bill reduces the power of the legal profession to regulate itself. One point of controversy is that a seven-person Legal Practice Council will have three members who are are appointed by the justice minister. The bill has passed through parliament and is only awaiting the signature of President Jacob Zuma to make it law. Source: BDLive
