It has emerged today that litigation heavyweight Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan is negotiating a group hire from Shearman & Sterling’s Brussels office that includes competition partner and office head Stephen Mavroghenis and partners Trevor Soames and Miguel Rato. All three joined Shearman in 2011 after the collapse of US-headquartered firm Howrey, with Mr Soames having previously served as Howrey’s own Brussels head.
Troubled past
Roll on Friday reports that other members of Shearman’s Brussels office are expected to follow the partners to their new firm, reducing the size of the currently ten-strong team further still. The office has had a troubled past and was left partnerless in 2009 after antitrust specialists Annette Schild and Silvio Cappellari left for Arnold & Porter, with Shearman relocating Düsseldorf partner Hans Meyer-Lindemann to run the office with three associates.
Quinn in Europe
Quinn Emanuel launched its Brussels office, its seventh in Europe, in 2014 and currently has two competition partners based in the city – Boris Bronfentrinker and European competition head Nadine Herrmann.
