Simmons & Simmons has confirmed that only half of its qualifying trainees have secured NQ contracts with the firm this round. Seventeen trainees applied for permanent positions with the firm from a total of 24, with 13 then receiving offers and 12 eventually accepting. Simmons & Simmons kept 80 per cent of its qualifiers in the spring and an impressive 96 per cent in the last autumn round, but its retention results have been erratic in recent years. In the 13 rounds since 2010, the firm has posted a retention rate of 80 per cent on five occasions, but has kept only 60 per cent just as many times. According to training principal Alan Gar, the uncertainty of the Brexit vote might have played a role in the latest disappointing result, though he conceded that he ‘would not pretend that was the only factor.’
