Luminance is a new artificial intelligence technology backed by Invoke Capital, a tech investment company set up by Autonomy co-founder Mike Lynch. Designed to ‘think like a lawyer,’ Luminance has the capacity to read and process hundreds of pages of complex legal documents in less than a minute and then continually update its interpretation of the data. Following a pilot period of several months, Slaughters has now committed to integrating Luminance into its practice.

Thinking like a lawyer

‘With Slaughter and May’s help, we are designing the system to understand how lawyers think, and to draw out key findings without the need to be told what to look for,’ said Luminance chief executive Emily Foges. The tool has been developed with input from Slaughters’ lawyers, as well as the expertise of researchers at the University of Cambridge. Like many emerging legal technologies, Luminance deals with the brunt work of legal due diligence processes, thus freeing up lawyers to take care of more finessed tasks. ‘Highly-trained lawyers who would otherwise be scanning through thousands of pages of repetitive documents can spend more of their time analysing the findings and negotiating the terms of the deal,’ Ms Foges explained.
