US financial data and analytics company S&P Global has hired Thomas Kim as its next chief legal officer, replacing Steve Kemps who is retiring.
Kim joins from US research and advisory business Gartner, where he was also CLO. At S&P Global, he will oversee its legal, government affairs, risk and compliance function. He will take up his new role on 19 October and report directly to CEO and president Martina Cheung.
New York-based S&P Global provides credit ratings, market data and financial market benchmark indexes.
Cheung said: “Thomas brings an exceptional track record and deep expertise across complex matters that shape the markets we operate in today and the adjacencies we continue to expand into. I look forward to welcoming his well-informed counsel and strategic perspective to our leadership team.”
Kim spent three and a half years at Gartner, originally joining as general counsel in 2023, before becoming CLO in March last year.
He previously spent more than two decades at Thomson Reuters and its predecessor company, including almost four years as CLO. He previously worked at Reuters Group before its merger with Thomson Corporation in 2008.
His first role at the combined company was as chief counsel for Reuters News, before taking on a number of different legal and business positions, including as Asia GC for its markets division, chief compliance officer and managing director of its China business.
He started his legal career in private practice at legacy firm Hancock Rothert & Bunshoft, before moving to Baker McKenzie.
Kemps, meanwhile, is set to leave after a decade in the role. He will remain on until 31 December as a special adviser to ensure a smooth transition, the company said.
Cheung added: “Steve’s insight, sound judgement and exceptional leadership have been instrumental in shaping S&P Global’s legal, governance and compliance framework, leaving a lasting legacy that positions the company for continued success. We are grateful for his many contributions and look forward to working closely with him to ensure a seamless transition.”
In other recent financial services-related in-house moves, earlier this month Lloyds Banking Group lined up Ajneet Jassey as its next CLO, replacing Kate Cheetham when she retires at the end of the year.
