He wanted Google to delete announcements about him which appeared in 1998 in a Spanish newspaper, revealing that his property was to be auctioned in order to pay off social security debts. He argued that the reference to the auction was no longer relevant as the proceedings were fully resolved several years back.

Grim reading

Privacy lawyers say that Google and other online publishers will need to rethink, from scratch, how they deal with links to such content. Richard Cumbley of Linklaters said that the decision was ‘grim reading for Google’. Eduardo Ustaran, also a specialist data protection lawyer, called the decision a ‘game-changer’.
