The deal marks the first time that a Japanese legal group acquires a foreign firm of this scale and will see the Bangkok-based firm serve as the centre for Mori Hamada's operations in the region, which will span 60 lawyers.

Growing demand

Mori Hamada already has a Bangkok office with five lawyers, but the firm has decided to step up its expansion in light of growing demand in neighbouring countries such as Myanmar. Data from the Japan External Trade Organization also shows that Thailand is the biggest destination in Southeast Asia for Japanese corporations in terms of the number of companies and the amount of direct investment, and one of the functions of the enlarged office will be to provide support for the flurry of acquisitions in the region.
