Toronto mayor seeks help from sole practitioner lawyer

Toronto mayor Rob Ford - famous for admitting to taking crack in one of his 'drunken stupors' - has appointed a sole practitioner lawyer as one of his leading advisers.

Dennis Morris has been described by the mayor as 'the best criminal lawyer in Canada'. The two have known each other for 25 years after Mr Morris represented the future mayor's siblings. The lawyer is now regularly seen at the mayor's side. As well as acting formally as lawyer to the mayor, Mr Morris is also a more general adviser. Mr Morris said in an interview: 'I’m his lawyer and I guess in times of turmoil he, amongst others, asks me for my advice and I’m sure I’m not the only one he speaks to about advising him on different aspects.'

Re-election

When asked about the mayor's chances of winning re-election, Mr Morris said: 'I think they’re excellent. I think if you asked me that a few months ago, I’d think otherwise because people aren’t happy when an individual with substance abuse difficulties doesn’t acknowledge and do something about them. It’s a type of illness and if you’re able to overcome it and take steps to overcome it, I think people will be forgiving.' Source: The Globe and Mail
