One potential stumbling block for the plan is that despite the police and courts having the technology needed to facilitate such a move, law firms still require information to be printed on paper.
The UK Authority web site reports that in some cases lawyers may be effectively banned from legal aid unless they can ‘work digitally with the rest of the criminal justice system’.
'Constant re-keying'
Mr Green said: ‘The aim for the criminal justice system must be a single case file that progresses electronically right through the system, from police to court and then prison or probation, without constant re-keying of information.’
Mr Green also revealed that just 44 per cent of trials start on the day planned at magistrates courts across England.
