Universities criticised for offering too many law places

Universities have been partly behind 'a huge expansion of LLB graduates' and growth 'at a hideous rate', according to the director of Legal Best Practice at the New Zealand Law Society.

While he sees opportunities in the current oversupply of lawyers in the country, Ashley Balls also sees an annual 4% growth rate in the number of practicing certificates between 1975 and 2007 as ‘scary, because that’s not being matched by increased demand’. He said: ‘For the future I think it means re-training. It means some frustration, it means a perpetuation of comparatively low salaries for a little while, but I think it’s exciting.’ Source: NZ Law Society
