Anaqua CEO Justin Crotty: 'Well-served, loyal customer base'

IP software firm Anaqua has acquired Patrix, its second European deal in 12 months.

The move will provide Boston-based Anaqua with access to what it describes as Patrix’s 400-strong “law firm-centric customer base”. Patrix’s flagship product is an IP management system called Patricia.

Anaqua CEO Justin Crotty said his company had long admired Patrix, which had “earned the trust” of IP professionals over decades.

“This combination brings to Anaqua a well-served, loyal customer base along with deep IP technology and law firm expertise,” he added.

“Concurrently, Patrix customers will now have the opportunity to access Anaqua’s broad capabilities, including global hosting and security infrastructure, industry-leading foreign filing, patent and trademark renewals and docketing services, and advanced AI-driven workflow tools and analytics.”

Anaqua plans to provide Patrix clients with the option to access its AI platform as their requirements evolve.

Carina Roth Schramm, founder and majority owner of Patrix, said: “I am pleased to entrust Anaqua to serve our clients during this next phase of their customer journey.

“Our two organisations share a strong cultural alignment that is underpinned by a software-led heritage and a client-centric philosophy, so I am confident that our customers’ evolving needs will be met well into the future.”

In 2024, Clarivate acquired Rowan TELS, developer of the Rowan Patents platform, in a move it said was designed to expand its intellectual property offering into patent drafting and prosecution, complementing its existing strengths in IP management and analytics.

It is Anaqua’s second deal since it was bought by technology investors Nordic Capital two years ago. In May last year, it acquired London-based start-up RightHub.

Anaqua was founded in 2004 and has offices across Europe, Asia and Australia.

It was formed following a collaboration between the IP departments of Ford and British American Tobacco, which was motivated by creating an automated workflow to manage an IP cycle including trademarks, designs and contracts.
