US law school classes at smallest since the 1970s

US law schools admitted just 39,675 students this year, an 11 per cent fall on the previous year, and the smallest number since the 1970s.

The numbers also represent a 24 per cent fall on three years ago. Schools have taken numerous measures to keep within budget on the lower revenue - by freezing pay, for instance, cuts lecturer and administrator numbers and even by arranging faculty buyouts.

However, Harvard Law School’s applications are markedly higher this year than the year before. Jessica Soban, Harvard’s assistant dean, said: ‘The turn-around at the top of the pool shows that people who are serious about law school are coming back.’ Source: ABA
