James Robb, associate dean of external affairs at Cooley Law School at Western Michigan University, has confirmed that lay off notices have been served at the school.

A law school is rumoured to be laying off staff Jiri Flogel

Mr Robb refused to give numbers and said ‘I think you’re hearing wrong’ when told of a rumour that some 50 per cent of faculty and staff members were being laid off. One faculty member explained that confidentiality and non-disparagement clauses were part of what they were being asked to sign in the layoff packages, and added: ‘So I cannot say anything on the record and very little off the record other than to confirm that the cuts to faculty and staff are significant and I am among those in that category.’

Reduced enrolment

Reduced numbers of students is a factor in the layoffs, confirmed Mr Robb. The school had a total enrolment figures of some 4,000 in 2010 - but that had fallen 38 per cent to 2,477 last year. Source: ABA
