Mr Israel is ending a 15-year career at Macfarlanes to join the competition practice at US-headquartered giant White & Case. Having previously trained at Slaughter and May, Mr Israel joined Macfarlanes in 2001, made partner in 2004 and was named head of the firm’s competition practice in 2006. He also co-led the firm’s cross-departmental competition litigation team. Macfarlanes competition partner Malcolm Walton will replace him as head of the firm’s competition practice, effective immediately. Meanwhile, Mr Israel’s start date at White & Case has not yet been confirmed.
‘Exciting synergies’ in competition, disputes and M&A
Macfarlanes has now lost its second practice head in two months, with Mr Israel’s departure coming hot on the heels of former financial services head David Berman’s defection to Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan in September, where he joined as head of regulatory and financial services. Meanwhile, White & Case is working to ramp up headcounts in London and New York. London managing partner Oliver Brettle commented: ‘Our 2020 strategy includes a focus on London, and on M&A and disputes, which has stimulated the needs for more competition law expertise on the ground in London, especially merger control work. Marc’s addition will provide exiting synergies between our competition, disputes and our M&A/private equity teams in London and across EMEA.’
