White & Case has hired a pair of top tax partners from Paul Hastings in London to bolster its transactional and tax structuring expertise.

The incoming duo are Arun Birla, who was Paul Hastings’ second managing partner and previously led its London office, and Jiten Tank. They bring experience across a range of tax matters, including cross-border M&A, private equity, private funds and real estate, regularly advising institutional clients, family offices and asset managers.

Heather McDevitt, White & Case chair, said: “Arun and Jiten’s market leading tax practice adds significant strength to our full-service offering. We are delighted to welcome these partners to White & Case and look forward to the significant contribution they will make to our clients and our firm.”

Birla brings more than 25 years of experience to White & Case, having spent almost 18 years as a partner at Paul Hastings, where he was co-chair of its international tax practice. Tank also brings significant experience, having been at Paul Hastings since 2009.

White & Case partner and vice chair Oliver Brettle said: “The arrival of Arun and Jiten is another clear example of strategic expansion on a global basis that ensures White & Case is positioned to support clients on their most important, complex, cross-border matters… Adding their talent to our partnership reflects the strength and ongoing success of White & Case.”

The duo’s arrival follows the hire of Catherine Hill in January, who joined as a partner in the firm’s London tax practice from Latham & Watkins.

Sang Ji, head of White & Case’s global tax practice, added: “Arun and Jiten bring a unique and differentiated combination of expertise in transactional and tax structuring, commercial acumen, strong client relationships and a stellar reputation in the market.

“They add materially to our strong tax team in London, which includes partners Will Lund, Jessica Kemp and Catherine Hill, deepening the integrated tax offering that White & Case provides globally to ensure our clients complete their key deals successfully.”

In other recent senior UK tax moves, in May BCLP hired legacy Shearman & Sterling’s London tax head Simon Letherman as a partner, while in March, legacy McDermott Will & Emery hired Alex Jupp from Skadden Arps in London as its UK head of tax.
