Gender pay gap lags private sector average by 10pc

Women in the Australian legal sector typically earn 36 per cent less than male counterparts - while women in the private sector as a whole are 26 per cent behind, according to data revealed by the Workplace Gender Equality Agency.

The report examines the earnings of people in 66 legal organisations. The Agency says that even 'well-intentioned' firms fail to make meaningful progress as their approach is ad hoc, rather than strategic. Helen Conway, the agency's director, said: 'Organisations are putting together initiatives but they’re not tied together under a strategy.'

Four firms lead the way

According to the report, only four large law firms have put key performance indicators in as part of the remit of managers on gender issues. These four are King & Wood Mallesons, Ashurst, Norton Rose Fulbright and Herbert Smith Freehills. This approach is a crucial part of implementing a succesful strategy, said Ms Conway.
