Aussie lawyers worried by bonus payments to law firms

A scheme through which state agency WorkSafe Victoria pays bonuses to law firms which minimise compensation claims from workers is causing concern among the local legal community.

At least one law firm, Lander & Rogers, has received over Aus $1.2m in 2010 and about $5m over the last five years. Supporters of the scheme say it encourages efficiency among legal advisers; opponents say it could encourage them to cut corners. A WorkSafe spokesman said that law firms received the bonuses only if they 'meet a range of performance criteria, which includes achieving a timely outcome for injured workers' claims for compensation and reducing the use of the courts'.
