Experienced lawyers are leaving large firms to set up their own practices, rather than defecting to other big players, according to experts in the US.

In Sacramento, California, two separate groups of lawyers have left the city's biggest law firm, Downey Brand, in under a month, for this reason. Another five lawyers left Wilke, Fleury, Hofflet, Gould & Birney to set up their own new practice on 1 January. Craig Brown of consultancy LawVision Group says: 'Lateral movement is increasing nationwide and this may be a subset of that. And some people are saying it may be better on my own with a small group of other lawyers.' Source: Sacramento Business Journal
