The oil company responsible for the disaster has begun its legal action with an appeal against a US district court over the handling of the $7.8bn settlement it promised to those affected, the Telegraph reports.
BP hopes to gain back compensation payments from false damage claims to arrest its massive compensation bill, which has surpassed £11bn.
Legitimate claims
According to advertisements taking out by BP in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post, BP’s obligation to honour all legitimate claims still stands. The ad read: ‘Whatever you think about BP, we can all agree that it’s wrong for anyone to take money they don’t deserve.’
In conjunction with the appeal, the company hopes to cut back on spending following the high costs related to the 2010 catastrophe.
