Hashtags: Companies are increasingly trademarking melpomen

Brexit has led to companies changing their trademark filing strategies, with almost half of respondents (49 per cent) stating they are filing more UK trademarks. The research, carried out by CompuMark, also found that trademark infringement was still a pressing concern among professionals — almost half of respondents (49 per cent) stated that the biggest impact of infringement is on reputation, followed by financial implications (24 per cent). This is contradictory to last year’s findings where financial impact was identified as the biggest issue (49 per cent), followed by reputation (32 per cent).

Hashtag trademarks

The trademarking of hashtags was also surveyed with 21 per cent stating they were applying for these types of trademarks and 59 per cent saying they may do so in the future. When asked about technology, the majority of respondents (68 per cent), having identified the increasing need to complete tasks electronically, said they work both on paper and online. Twenty two  indicated they performed all day-to-day tasks online.

Other challenges

In addition to Brexit preparations, other challenges for legal departments included being tasked with doing more with fewer resources (33 per cent), doing more electronically and on mobile devices (15 per cent) and getting to market faster (10 per cent).
