The London School of Economics academic has achieved some notoriety over his classifications of corporate law, financial services and other sectors as ‘bullshit jobs’. But he stands by his view and says that people taking on such roles can pay a heavy price. He said: ‘Huge swathes of people, in Europe and North America in particular, spend their entire working lives performing tasks they secretly believe do not really need to be performed. The moral and spiritual damage that comes from this situation is profound. It is a scar across our collective soul.’
Miserable
He quotes an Australian corporate lawyer saying: ‘ I contribute nothing to society, I’m miserable all the time, I just do this for my children, otherwise I’d get out.’ Source: ABA
