The number of High Court cases relating to data theft has trebled in two years - as new cloud storage services make it easier for employees to steal.Case numbers have risen from 45 in 2010 to 106 in 2011 and to 167 in 2012, according to statistics collected by law firm EMW. Most of the cases relate to civil claims made by organisations against former employees. In general, the organisations are trying to prevent the ex-employee from using confidential data.
Data retrieval made easier
Cloud storage systems such as DropBox have made it easier for employees to retrieve data, says Mark Finn of EMW. He told Computer World UK: 'The boom in cloud computing and the widespread use of services like Dropbox have made copying a large database something that can be accomplished by virtually anyone in seconds.'
