Growing use of drones by law enforcers has stimulated the market, which is estimated to bring in $840m this year. Restraints on growth are coming from falling defence budgets (on the military side) as well as a lack of skilled pilots and tight regulations. For instance, only a minority of EU countries now permit the flying of small drones - but it is expected that most of them will work hard to catch up.

Despite these challenges, large amounts are being spent on R&D in countries including South Korea, China, Germany, France and Australia, according to the report ‘Multirotor Drones Market by Application, Payload, Region - Forecast to 2020’. Germany, Australia, South Korea, Israel, the UK and the US are home to some of the leading manufacturers.
