Crypto exchange Bybit has appointed Peter Loo as chief legal and compliance officer as the company continues to evolve into a fully regulated financial platform.

Loo was most recently chief operating officer at blockchain business MANTRA. At Bybit he will be responsible for the exchange’s global legal, regulatory and compliance strategy and strengthening internal governance, advancing licensing efforts and fostering constructive engagement with regulators worldwide.

Dubai-based Bybit is the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume.

Ben Zhou, co-founder and CEO of Bybit, said: “Peter brings a depth of experience that is both rare and highly relevant to where Bybit is headed. Having worked across regulators, global financial institutions and Web3 platforms, he understands not only how rules are written, but also how they are applied in practice across jurisdictions.

“As we continue to build Bybit into a new financial platform, one that connects crypto and traditional finance in a structured and compliant way, Peter’s leadership will be critical in strengthening our regulatory foundations and ensuring we scale responsibly on a global level.”

Prior to his time at MANTRA, which he left in September last year, Loo was general counsel and head of sector development at Dubai’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority, where he led development of the regulator’s licensing frameworks, market conduct policies and enforcement protocols.

He also had earlier GC spells at FM Capital Partners, Eden Rock Group and FlintAcre. Loo was also previously head of legal at asset manager MF Global in London, having worked in-house at Barclays and Citigroup before that.

He started his legal career as an associate at Clifford Chance.

Loo said: “The opportunity at Bybit is to help shape what a truly global, regulated digital financial platform can look like. The industry is entering a phase where credibility, structure, and regulatory alignment are no longer optional. Bybit has built strong momentum, and my focus is on reinforcing that with the right frameworks, processes and engagement models so that we can operate in a way that meets the expectations of both regulators and institutional participants globally.”

In other recent crypto moves, back in March Canadian digital assets business DeFi Technologies appointed Philippe Lucet as GC from its subsidiary Valour, replacing Kenny Choi in the role.
